If you're looking for balance - not too bright, not too dark - Blues Specials are for you. While playing clean, Blues Specials sound thick and creamy with open and clear highs and a thicker midrange. The overwound coil tames your highs and bumps your midrange more than the Stock Tele Pickups, while you can still expect a traditional Tele tone. With distortion, you can expect a light compression, low-end growl, and a medium attack. Single notes sound thick and round, while chords have a full tone with an early breakup. Note: This pickup has three leads attached: black and white leads for the coil, and a blue wire that's attached to the cover. This allows you to install it in a guitar with a 4-way switch without needing to modify the pickup. Of course, it can be wired like any Tele neck pickup, so it will work with standard Tele 3-way wiring too, but many people use 4-way switches, so we order these from Fralin with three wires to make 4-way wiring easy to accomplish.

An additional benefit: when combining two pickups from different manufacturers there's always the risk that they'll be out of phase with each other. With some pickups you can fix this by simply reversing the wiring of one of the two pickups, but in a Tele this isn't easy, because reversing the leads on either Tele neck or Tele bridge pickups - while it does reverse that pickup's phase - causes other problems. But having a separate wire for the cover mitigates this, as it allows you to reverse the connections for the black/white wires, reversing the phase of the pickup without consequence (the blue wire always goes to ground). So if you're mixing this neck pickup with a non-Fralin bridge pickup, having the third wire is a handy feature.
